Shortie - Immune System in a Sharpei

Shortie is a 10 year old male Sharpei who came to us in mid-March for an acupuncture consultation of his markedly enlarged right hock which was first seen in 1999. His regular veterinarian had diagnosed by biopsy that this joint was not cancerous, but was due to bacterial infection of the bone (osteomyelitis) and inflammation of the tissues over the bone (panosteitis).

In addition, he had a chronic skin infection (pyoderma) which required that he take an antibiotic. He had been on this antibiotic for several years and each time his guardian took him off this antibiotic, his skin would break out in oozing sores between the toes and all over the body spots.

Most recently he had lost a lot of weight and was not regaining any of it despite heroic efforts on the part of his guardians to feed him properly. An extensive diagnostic workup of this weight loss problem lead to the diagnosis of an eosinophilic enteritis, and further tests lead to the discovery of a mass in his abdomen that was partially obstructing his small intestine. His guardian was anxious to avoid surgery, so it was never diagnosed specifically as to what sort of mass is there.

Shortie has now (April 2003) received a series of 4 treatments of acupuncture and has been put on a regimen of vitamins, Chinese herbs, nutriceuticals, and immune boosters to augment the effects of his acupuncture. The effects have been very gratifying. He is now off of his long-term antibiotics and his skin is fine. Shortie is now using his leg almost all the time (he was pretty much 3-legged and not using his right hock (ankle) at all). In addition his energy levels are improved and he's running around all the time (he previously slept a lot). The nicest news is that Shortie is finally gaining back his weight loss (over 1 lb. in 10 days) and eating regularly (his appetite had gotten very finicky).

In Memory of Shortie

Shortie passed away very suddenly due to rupture of his cancer.

Special thanks to Dr. Chickie Adams and Cottage Veterinary Hospital in Walnut Creek for this referral.
